Are we ready for the new world order?
Dears readers,
We hope you are and your beloved ones are in good health.
2020 is not yet finished. However, we can certainly say, it has been extremely challenging so far.
COVID-19 has triggered socio-economic disruption with the power of an asteroid hitting earth. How are we all going to cope with the post-pandemic world? There is a lot of uncertainty now and many questions will remain unanswered for a long time.
The shocking spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has caught all countries off guard. The dynamics of our lives have been rapidly disrupted. This novel virus has also changed the way the world does business. Perhaps, for good.
As an entrepreneur and director, I am very used to challenges and disruption. To be viable, a business must adapt to the evolving markets. Otherwise, it inevitably falls behind.
COVID-19 is a rather difficult challenge: a plot-twist that brings numerous socio-economic structural changes. Think of the digital economy, the on-line education, the decentralized workforce, deglobalization and the desire to nationalize supply chains to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
It is time to think about viable strategies that boost economic recovery and sustain growth, strategies that shape the future of the new era.
Trace Software International is innovating first-class smart engineering software solutions since 1987. We know very well how electricity is at the heart of economic and social development. The economic hibernation has caused a historical fall in energy demand in the past 70 years and a consequent unprecedented decline in CO2 emissions. Now more than ever, the concepts of energy efficiency, sustainability, and waste management should drive conscious choices.
It is time to build a new order of the world and seize opportunities.

ARCHELIOS™ PRO PV SOFTWARE INTEGRATES DATA FROM K2 BASE SOFTWARE
Trace Software International is pleased to announce a cooperation between the photovoltaic design and simulation software archelios™ Pro and the mechanical software K2 Base, designed by K2 Systems.
How does it work?
In K2 Base, the user maps his project with the parameters corresponding exactly to the mounting system. The design is carried out in 2D ½ (2D plans with elevations). The calculation of possible ballast weights can be operated, and the list of equipment required for the assembly of the PV installation is generated.
In archelios™ Pro, the project is automatically localized and the 2D plans ½ and PV modules are imported in 3D. The user can go ahead with the design: inverter sizing, wiring, technical-economic simulation, editing of plans and reports.
WHY ARE DISCRIMINATION STUDIES AMONG PROTECTIONS SO IMPORTANT?
Carrying out a discrimination study is critical to ensure the correct functioning of the electrical system in the event of possible faults. The terms “discrimination” and “selectivity” refer to the electrical current tripping of a device or piece of equipment and describe the same concept.
This is due to the system being coordinated to discriminate between incoming and outgoing devices and prevent any further outgoing fault current from affecting the entire system. Electrical engineers often produce a discrimination (selectivity) study at various stages within a project.
elec calc™ software offers critical calculations for factors such as earthing systems, cable ampacity, short circuit currents, thermal stresses, voltage drops, and discrimination studies between protections that are key for the continuation of supply.
Discover how elec calc™ can help to ensure power continuity..
WHAT ARE THE PHOTOVOLTAIC NOISE BARRIERS (PVNBS)?
Nowadays, there are so many different technologies that could leverage solar power. One of them is the Photovoltaic noise barriers (PVNBs).
Photovoltaic noise barriers (PVNBs) are designed to mitigate noise levels, shield receivers from noise pollution generated by road traffic, and produce clean energy. Their structure is composed of a noise barrier system with a photovoltaic (PV) installation that converts sunlight into electricity.
Would you like to know more about their design and function? You can read our article.

THE EFFECTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON THE SOLAR ENERGY INDUSTRY
COVID-19 is the novel virus that caused the first major pandemic of the new millennium. The paralysis of the economy and limited mobility during the lockdown have caused the largest drop in energy demand in the past 70 years and a consequent unprecedented decline in Co2 emissions. In the words of IEA, this is a “historic shock to the entire energy world”.
COVID-19 pandemic has triggered economic disruption across many industries including the solar energy sector, mostly reliant on a Chinese import. Lockdowns have put numerous photovoltaic projects on standby due to interruptions or delays in supply chains.
Although factories are already open and companies are reactivating their usual activities, the economic damages are extensive. The recovery will on the size of the company, on its liquidity capacity, and debt access or restructuring.
How is the solar energy industry coping with the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions?

THERMAL STRESS IN AN ELECTRIC CONDUCTOR
The elec calc™ software calculates the maximum let-through energy on all the conductors and compares it to their thermal withstand value (according to the formula k²×S²). This verification applies to the phases but also to the neutral and to the PE. If this condition is not met a thermal stress error is displayed on the cable. In the event of a thermal stress problem, it is always possible to oversize the cross-section of the conductors, thus increasing their admissible thermal stress. However, other possibilities can overcome this increase in section.

THE 5 BIGGEST SOLAR PANEL TECHNOLOGIES
In the last decade, the world has experienced a major energy shift. After the acknowledgment of the dangers of fossil coal use, international governments have turned their look to renewable energy sources to build a sustainable future. Amongst clean energy sources, solar energy represents a promising option to reduce carbon footprint. Bell Labs invented the first silicon solar cell in 1954, but it is only in the past ten years that solar PV has established itself as a solution to address both the world’s energy growing demand challenge and greenhouse gas concern. Amongst the biggest game-changing solar panels technologies, there are floating solar panels, solar power in space, solar cell fabrics and much more.

BIM AND SUSTAINABILITY
The sustainability of the construction sector can be measured by defining how green the building is in terms of energy and material consumption during its construction, use, maintenance, and demolition. A better management of resources, thanks to the BIM objects database, guarantees improved efficiency during the entire building life process. Nowadays, BIM is still little used in the electricity sector, even if it can bring important advantages in terms of energy efficiency as errors and wastes are reduced. Unfortunately, many activities are still carried out outside the digital model, such as the power balance, the wiring system connecting the sources and loads to the protective equipment, the sizing of the cables themselves, and the coordination with other disciplines such as the thermomechanical one. However, loads, generators, transformers, and electrical panels can be represented in the model by using generic objects. These components must be inserted into appropriate electrical circuits that also include control devices, protective equipment, and connecting cables.

Why are floating PV plants a promising future for solar energy?
Floating solar PV plants are an emerging form of PV systems that float on the surface of drinking water reservoirs, quarry lakes, irrigation canals or remediation and tailing ponds. According to the World Bank, with a global potential of 400 GW under very conservative assumptions, floating solar could double the existing installed capacity of solar PV but without the land acquisition that is required for ground-mounted installations. As there are more than 400,000 square kilometers (km2) of man-made reservoirs in the world (Shiklomanov 1993), the floating solar has a theoretical potential on a terawatt scale, purely from the perspective of the available surface area. Floating solar power generating systems typically generate more electricity than ground-mount and rooftop systems due to the cooling effect of the water. But this is not the only advantage.
Discover all the benefits.
The electrical installations in critical facilities
Demand for uninterruptable reliable power in critical facilities is the norm. The electrical equipment must be reliable and operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To guarantee the power supply and the efficient management of the operations, critical infrastructures require a highly resistant, reliable and secure electrical installation. When the electrical system fails, the security of the community is compromised. This is why it is important to adopt a holistic approach in which personnel, devices, and integrated monitoring systems are integrated. First of all, safety and compliances with current regulations are imperative to guarantee the minimization of risk, and profitability throughout the life cycle of the electrical installations. Because of this, investing in quality turns out to be an intelligent choice.
Keep on reading about critical facilities’ electrical networks.
Which are the factors to consider when installing PV modules?
Concerns about the environmental consequences of greenhouse gas emission heightened interest in the development of renewable energy sources. Amongst them, solar is the world’s fastest growing form of renewable energy. Solar photovoltaic technology converts sunlight into electricity. However, the installation of the photovoltaic modules must take into account some factors to take full advantage of solar radiation: the orientation, the inclination, the latitude of the place, the climatic conditions, and the effect of shadows between the photovoltaic modules. The correct consideration of these variants will help ensure that they produce maximum energy by being exposed to the greatest solar radiation for the longest period of time.
Learn more about the factors to consider when installing PV modules.
Calculation of the minimum cross section of the conductors of an electrical installation
When calculating the cross-section of the conductors of an electrical installation, the following factors must be considered: the current likely to flow through the conductor, environmental parameters and methods of installation, thermal stress withstood by the conductor in the event of a short circuit, the voltage drop, energy efficiency. Needless to say, the calculation of the minimum cross section of the conductors is a complex operation. The use of adapted software is an invaluable aid to ensure that the transport of energy is carried out safely, while achieving the highest level of energy efficiency and ensuring cost optimization.
